Really, any metaphor can burn you if you give it in the wrong crowd. From a Politics 101 perspective, you tailor your delivery to your audience, even if you keep your message constant. Running afoul of sports fans may seem like a bizarre pitfall of having a standard stump speech that you trot out for all occasions, but I think that most instances of the general case are going to sound bizarre to most people.

Case N+1: A candidate gives his stump speech at MIT and uses some metaphor glorifying Harvard. For most values of "someone", I predict a solid round of hissing and razzing from the crowd. That candidate would suffer some embarassment because his/her staff failed to do their homework, and all of the Ivy League student newspapers would run little stories saying how cute we are that we hiss when Harvard is mentioned. There but for the grace of the primary schedule, and of the widely-held assumption that our state will vote Democratic in the general election, go we.
