Serenity Sales
a) Don't most movies these days eventually make more from rental and sales than from the theaters?

b) From the numbers in this article, it looks like Serenity hasn't yet made as much (gross) fro DVD sales as it did from box office. Right?

c) It sounds like the real point of the story is that Serenity has now made a profit.

Re: Serenity Sales
Gross ticket sales: $38M
Net studio take from ticket sales (est.): $19M

DVD rentals: $9M ("Serenity has made $9M" - probably gross?)
DVD sales: over 2 million units (at ~$15 each would be $30M gross)

$39M > $38M comparing grosses

Umm... hm, this isn't really a useful look at the numbers, for predicting any future movie possibilities, is it? We have no idea what the actual average price paid was for a DVD of Serenity... or, more importantly, what portion of DVD proceeds go to the studio in the end. Assuming a similar 50% mark, we're still looking at Universal at $10M in the hole for this movie, given their estimate of $10M in marketing costs on the thing.
