from zephyr... happy Bloomsday.

M: Reading a summary of Ulysses, I don't quite grasp how it is such a literary masterpiece.
me: Reading... a summary...
me: looking at a snapshot of the ceiling of the sistine chapel, I really don't get the big deal.
M: fucking smartasses.
me: fucking philistines.

Not that I've read it or anything, but there's no way you'd catch me judging it from a summary.

When I was in Ireland I thought about maybe giving it a try. Still thinking about it. Once the dust settles from all this life chaos it will be possible.

(Ed: Thanks to fyfer for finding it online)

This is especially true, because the genius of Ulysses is in the execution, not the plot. A summary can only give you plot, not execution.

Having made a game attempt at Ulysses back in the day and slunk off in defeat, my basic sense is that any arbitrarily selected set of words would approximate a summary of it.

"X was hard for me to understand" != "X is meaningless".

Though computer programmers usually think so.

True.
OTOH, "X is densely written and says what it has to say in a mostly nonexpository way" and "X is extremely difficult to summarize usefully" are more related statements.
