New Orleans...

Ok, it's about a million times worse than I thought when I first looked.  When headlines were reading "58 dead", it sure seemed like the mayor was overblown saying it was "our tsunami."  And I made annoyed sounds about that claim.  I was wrong.

They're now saying thousands dead...  there is rioting, there are gunshots being fired at rescue helicopters, and...  it's just chaos everywhere.  As I read more reports, I get the feeling it will be quite some time before we know the full extent of the loss.  But this isn't just a loss of stuff, as I first thought.  People's lives are gone.

And now to turn this tragedy into a chance to make political hay.  No, this isn't about politics, this isn't about us vs. them, this is about an idiot's response to the tragedy.

I just watched Bush's speech from yesterday at  and the New York Times is right, it's one of the worst speeches ever.  Excerpts:

"I also asked the pilot to fly over the gulf coast region, so I could see first-hand the scope and magnitude of the devastation."
"The United States Coast Guard is conducting search and rescue missions, working alongside local officials - local assets."
"The Department of Defense is deploying major assets to the region."

Who talks like this?  He consistently used words like "asset" and "infrastructure."  This is not a compassionate speech, it's a status report delivered to the board of directors.

I'd like to talk more about the reports of Iraq policies being a big factor in the unpreparedness of the region, the gall of Bush saying that the devastation was unexpected.

I'd also like to post this without the vitriol, without the anger...  I'd like to just post well wishes for the people who are still in mortal danger...  but I can't seem to bring myself to post about New Orleans without bringing Bush into it.  He's just too deep in it.
