I want a church that says that european cathedrals are a miracle because people got together and the work spanned generations to make these buildings a reality. That their capacity for belief was all they needed, and that we can build a religion around just that capacity for belief, without the potentially fictitious 'seed' that other religions build on, of God, or Savior, or E-Meters.

I wonder if people would get behind that. Oh wait, by questioning whether people would get behind that I'm showing doubt in the human capacity for belief... which means not even I'm behind it.

Hmm. Dilemma.

Odd, I thought I was part of such a church. :) Seriously, and at the risk of sounding heretical, the focus of any religion is really on the people. The stories are meant to help with that.

The capacity to believe...um...just what? Perhaps you mean the capacity to believe that human beings can get together and do wonderful things.

It sounds like perhaps you lack the capacity to believe in
God, or Saviors, or E-Meters. (Can't quite tell, though.)

Who can say what all the motives were behind cathedral builders. Take a look at the builders and funders of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in NYC for a modern example.

But I would like to think that part of the motive (for CSJD and for the medieval wonders) was their capacity to believe in the purposes for which those buildings were built, which are pretty frankly ordinary Christian religious ones.

I think the problem with making humanity as the explicit focus of your religion is that you will always be disappointed. We are an ambiguous species, and I perhaps do not have much capacity to believe that, left to our own devices, we are likely to do any more good than evil.
