it's back...

the laptop-buying urge is back, this time set off by an offer in the mail for 0% APR for one year on balance transfers... Which means, once again, that I'd have a year to pay off the purchase. It'd be easy. Also, this would be a nice card to have; higher return rate on the card, and in cash rather than "sony points"... I've still got about $450 worth of Sony brand stuff coming to me that I don't know how to spend...

What is it with me and stuff?

It's media brainwashing, of course!

You do relize that if you are ever going to save towards a major purchase, it will never happen if you spend money you don't have.

I never charge what I can't pay off that month on my credit card.

If you're just using the 0%apr as a weird sort of 6% earnings on your money, well, that's different. Not a game I'd play, but it's ok.

What laptop are you contemplating?
I desperately need a new one, but don't want to spend N grand without having a job. The old one has to do for now.

Amazon's page for the Compaq Presario X1010US Notebook PC (1.30-GHz Pentium-M (Centrino), 512 MG RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD-RW Drive) shows a lot of good info on what seems to be a very featureful laptop.

I've really liked the Compaq desktop machine I have had for a couple of years now; the engineering in the case is very impressively user-friendly.

The fact that a week or two after having first spotted this machine, I'm still thinking it's a great deal, is starting to push me over the edge... But I'm going to hold off even longer, make sure I don't come up with other reasons not to get it. Like, say, wanting to save money for trips to Boston. But I can afford both, I'm pretty sure. Especially if I think about going some non-Thanksgiving time, when I can go for $200.

dude, forget the stuff. how could you be succumbing to the SPAM?!?!!? they're sending you junk mail and you're seriously contemplating responding affirmatively? Do you realize how BAD that makes it for people everywhere?

This is just paper mail. It cost them some amount of money to send me this ad, I don't mind it as much as spam, which costs much less, and is therefore much more of an inundation. Bottom line, I personally don't object to getting this kind of paper mail.

Hehe, yeah, we'd much rather see you than your laptop.
