returning from Gen Con

While some of my friends had no issues returning from Gen Con whatsoever, others seem to have had a heinous time caused by (as usual) stormy weather at ORD (O'Hare). When I heard about it third-hand, I realized that this happens to someone every year coming back from Indy...

Next year I when people start talking about flights to Gen Con, I'm going to make sure to send everyone email: "ALL THESE AIRPORTS ARE YOURS EXCEPT FOR ORD. ATTEMPT NO LANDINGS THERE."

O'Hare in the summer sucks and should die die die die! The statistics are scary: something like 90% of flights through it are delayed.

I will go to great lengths to avoid ORD because I've had so many problems with flight delays there. It's just not worth it, unless that's actually your final destination. When I went to Germany last year, I made a point of avoiding ORD, JFK, and Newark.

Happens on Memorial Day weekend, too.

ORD always has a problem. abce has never had a trip involving that airport without problem, even the ones where it was the origin or destination. We always avoid it.

Amen. Times 100.

We've started going through Detroit or Minneapolis. Those don't seem to have the same issues. Or stick to direct flights.

ORD has usually done fairly well by me... except for that one time i sat locked in a plane for close to 6 hours with no air conditioning on an ORD-YVR leg due to an unfortunate combination of freezing rain, dead APU (so we kept having to wait for a scarcely available air start cart -- and probably also the cause of no air conditioning), and international flight regulations. even then, the trouble was more the airline (United) than ORD. thankfully, the captain did have to sense to steadfastly refuse to relinquish the gate so we at least had the possibility of reentering the terminal. (which we were eventually able to do)

Yes. Totally. One of the big advantages of living in Santa Clara instead of Champaign is that it's generally possible not to fly through Chicago.

those champaign - ohare flights on AA were terrible -- always delayed in the evening, even if ORD was having a good day. every time i flew out of CMI, i'd walk up to the gate and ask if we had a wheels-up time yet.

when i was going to indy regularly, i booked thru ORD a few times. i think i managed to connect there with no problems twice, out of 8-10 attempts... fortunately, the united agents at indy always treated me well -- they got used to rebooking me on usair thru DCA.

that was winter, tho -- in the summer, i'll book ORD without too much concern. better than ATL/CLT/IAH/DFW or other southern hubs.

and however bad it is, it's still better than newark.
