Ingenious

And diabolical.

When checking in online at Northwest Airlines' website, I got prompted to
volunteer if I had flexible travel plans. This is a very nice innovation,
stopping us from having to make the offer there in the terminal, taking up
the gate agent's time. Neat. Then, when I clicked through to "volunteer",
I got the next question: "How much would you be willing to accept in order
to volunteer? Lower bids will be accepted first."

Well played, Northwest. Well played...

Hm, shouldn't you get a dollar less than the next lowest bid would have been willing to take? Ie, the opposite of the way Ebay works? Or maybe not, I'm confusing myself trying to work this out

and?? what did you bid? did it work? or do you have to wait until the airport to find out? us airline geeks want to know!

(personally, i would never volunteer without negotiating both the compensation and the alternate arrangements...)

I couldn't bid on the website, it turns out, because the hotel net was really wonky... it mostly worked until there was something I wanted to submit to a website, I think. Or something.

Anyway, when I got to the terminal the checkin thing made the same offer. Bidding $400 actually got the message back "$300 is the maximum bid" which, well, I thought about it, and bid that.

Then I didn't get bumped. Not sure if it was because I was late or what, but yeah, I think people like you is why they did this - so that they can bump the people who are willing to do it without "alternate arrangements."

But it was in San Diego, where I assumed I had a place to stay if push came to shove, flying through Minneapolis, where I had a place to stay, if push came to shove, so I just went for it.
