BPM

Anyone know good free software for populating a pile of MP3- and AAC-encoded files with tempo tags? I find that my workout gets much much more efficient, and I walk faster on the street, when the music hits a certain narrow band of tempo, and it'd be nice to be able to create a smart playlist.

MusicBrainz. For a Mac, iEatBrainz is a fine client. I'm told Amarok does this automatically.

I had no idea software was even out there for that. That's awesome!

Coming from the other direction, there are a number of decent podcasts with exercise-tempo'd music that might be interesting to you.

As a hidden bonus (at no additional charge), a number of them will remind you of being in a car with Yoav in the late 1990's. :-)
