the bike

Yesterday turned into a very good day, when instead of playing more World of Warcraft, I asked chenoameg what was happening around the same time her friend Lisa asked her about finding people to go to Walden... Meg was busy with some other stuff (I'm expecting that at some point we'll hear about the results of that expedition... ;), but Meg gave us each the other's AIM address.

So after a bit of talking Lisa and I decided to go for a bike ride, then go to Walden. I delayed a bit getting my gear together, and we finally got out on the bike path at 12:45 or so.

Let me say now, the new bike clothes makes a huge difference in comfort while biking - it breathes, it pads, and I felt pretty good going out... for a while. :)

We biked to Davis Square... walked the bikes across, and then biked to Arlington Center... to Spy Pond... to the Bike Shop...

A couple times I stopped to rest; Lisa was very patient, even though she's in a lot better shape than I am. By the Bike Shop I was slowing way down and feeling a little out of it. A long stop to chat in the sun helped that out.

When all was said and done, we made it all the way out to Lexington Center. This is huge, for me. I did it once before, when I was in better shape, with awfief (and went beyond, actually, that time), but at this point I've really let myself go, and this was a huge push for me.

I need to do it again. I need to get to the point where it's not a huge deal anymore... And that means practicing it.

On the way back, we decided to stop by baronet, vorpalbunny, and vorpalkitten's place (as well as gentlescholar and intuition_ist) to say hi... and we discovered an impromptu barbecue! A short bike ride home to make sure we miss any potential rain later, and we drove back over, this time armed with ice cream.

It's always fun to compare notes about our different educational backgrounds... hearing horror stories of certain math teachers makes me appreciate the U of M (Minnesota, not Michigan. Duh!) programs of my youth that much more.

Anyway, it was a great day, I actually did something, and in the morning and evening I still got to play my video games with online friends. Can't beat that!

I've only ridden the path out to Lexington Center once. I thought I was going to die!

bike!
it does get better with time.
I would probably be back in that boat again if I ever got a chance
to ride a bike again - I remember lexington center being as far as
I could go the first time I went on the bike path, and then I remember
a summer where I was trying to get more into shape where I almost made a habit out of sprinting down the bike path as much as I could manage
to Trader Joes and back in about an hour on some random evenings after work - big contrast.
