a little lost

Did anyone happen to see which way 'up' went?

At that point in the afternoon I didn't know either. Then I spent several lovely hours with the vorpals. Vorpalkitten was very clear that up was the good place to go, and in the end there was a slide, so I feel all straightened out now.

According to common lore:

If you are caught in an avalanche, you are usually dazed and confused, you won't know which way is up, to find this out spit. Yup, do exactly what your parents think is disgusting. Gravity will pull the spit down and dig the opposite way the spit went.

According to the Utah Avalanche center:

It doesn’t matter which way is up. You can’t dig yourself out of avalanche debris. It’s like you are buried in concrete. Your friends must dig you out.
