thoughts of an insomniac

A thought just occurred to me... A realization, of sorts, about my attitudes about religion.

I don't want to believe in a God who cares more about me than about anyone else in the world. I don't want to believe in a God who favors me in some way, one who helps the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl, one who helps Americans kill bystanders in Afghanistan. I don't want to believe in a God that values Israelis over Palestinians, or vice versa.

That's where my basic attitude of "God exists, but must not interfere" comes from, I think.

I think it's a bad assumption to assume that all ways in which God might interfere are zero-sum game. I do agree that high school football teams praying in a huddle that will crush the visiting team seems silly, though.

One suggestion is to append to prayers of petition is to ask that it be done for the highest good of all concerned. It sounds somewhat New Age, but I think it's a good way to go about things. It recognizes that "highest good" might not be exactly what you're asking for, and that's IMO really important. Very often the thing which we most want isn't necessarily what's in our best interest.

"Be careful what you wish for, for you might get it."
